Bitch

The term has been used as an insult or dysphemism since 1400. As an animal metaphor, it refers to the uncontrollability and aggressiveness of a female dog in heat (original meaning of the English word). In this sense, the term is usually applied pejoratively to women who stubbornly resist (male) dominance. Furthermore, due to the aspect of being in heat, the term is linked with associations of exaggerated female sexuality, which is experienced as threatening and instinct-driven and also provides grounds for devaluation. Essentially, the pejorative use by men can be understood as an expression of a fear of losing power, which is also linked to sexual desires.
The term has become increasingly popular due to its use in hip-hop. Here, bitch is sometimes used offensively by women as a self-designation in order to reinterpret it positively - as with nigger, gay or queer - for example in the Riot Grrrl movement of the 1990s or by female rappers. One well-known example is Missy Elliott, whose quote A bitch is a pussy for me is considered legendary. Here, too, the term is meant in the sense of a rebellious woman and not a prostitute. Lady Bitch Ray also interprets the word in her song Ich bin 'ne Bitch!
