Handcuffs
Handcuffs (also known as handcuffs, handcuffs or cuffs for short) are used to bind hands and (in a slightly modified form) feet. They consist of two metal rings that are connected to each other. Both rings are fitted with a locking mechanism.
It is important to ensure that the handcuffs used are not cheap €5 handcuffs with colourful plush. Cheap handcuffs can break very quickly and can often be opened by the wearer.
The first uses of handcuffs date back to the Middle Ages. At that time, they still consisted of two semicircular halves of iron bands that were connected to each other by locks. Massive chains were attached between the medieval handcuffs to further restrict freedom of movement. John J. Tower and Edward D. Bean invented the internal locking mechanism of modern handcuffs around 1860. Today's mechanism is based on the Harold Wessen/Peerless patent from 1932.
