Abrasion

Abrasion is actually a medical term and means abrasion. It refers to the scratching, scraping, scouring or abrasion of body tissue with a tool. In BDSM, this practice goes deeper and is used to make a sub particularly sensitive in a certain area. Treating the skin with abrasive objects such as sandpaper, particularly rough fabric, steel wool or brushes maximises the sensitivity of the skin. Active ingredients in organic materials that attack the skin or cause reactions are also often used, e.g. nettles. Simple twigs with or without leaves are also used as a rubbing tool. This is known as birching.
