In BDSM, feminisation is an erotic role-playing game in which a man slips into the role of a woman through his clothing and behaviour. It is a playful form of cross-dressing. This type of role play, in which a gender other than one's own is assumed, is also referred to as gender play (gender: social or psychological gender of a person, play: game). Feminisation for medical reasons is referred to as effeminisation.

Motives and practice
Feminisation occurs out of personal inclination, e.g. an affinity for lingerie, or as part of a BDSM relationship and is frequently mentioned in the literature. The duration of feminisation can range from a limited period of time, e.g. a few hours, to permanent feminisation.

Clothing and fetish
Feminisation often takes place covertly, e.g. by wearing women's underwear, women's stockings and suspenders under street clothes. Men who prefer to wear women's underwear are referred to as women's underwear wearers. Sometimes fetish clothing such as corsets, rubber or latex underwear is another form of expression. The change to women's clothing and shoes, the wearing of make-up etc. can follow certain models. Attempts are often made to imitate the image of the proper lady in clothing and behaviour, with the desired motifs often reminiscent of the 1950s and 1960s. Another variant is the sexualisation of the female role model, e.g. through exaggerated make-up, provocative clothing or high heels. This can exert a strong sexual attraction on the wearer and her partner.

Taking on the female role
In the case of permanent feminisation, the feminised man often takes over the running of the household and the female partner becomes the dominant part of the relationship. In these relationships, the topic of coupling and chastity (cf. penis cage) often plays a role, as it is often only through sexual emasculation that a complete (but temporary) identification with the new role takes place. Female behaviour is also practised and adopted, a female name is used and often an extreme distorted image of femininity is used for the external appearance, which triggers strong sexual arousal in both partners.

Female naming can be an important aspect of the gender role change; the use of the (self-chosen) female name marks the transition from reality to role play. Within the game, the corresponding female names are also used for the male sexual organs. Passive anal intercourse, possibly with the aid of a strapon, can be part of the assumed gender role and can also be stimulating for both partners.

Forced feminisation
Forced feminisation takes place in BDSM between two consenting partners (SSC). On the one hand, the focus is on the mutual experience of submission; on the other hand, sexually connoted humiliation and degradation can also play an important role, especially when involving the public. The process of forced feminisation includes the wearing of clothing and make-up, which the dominant partner specifies and selects, as well as the enforcing of gender-specific behaviour. Stereotypical and exaggerated images of women are often used as a model. For example, appearing in public with extremely short skirts, high heels and a heavily made-up face is intended to imitate a prostitute and thus reinforce the humiliation of the feminised woman. The term forced feminisation is used in the English-speaking world, but it can also refer to real-life forced feminisation, e.g. the rape of men in prisons. These real-life situations are also described in the relevant literature as homosexual forced feminisation fantasies, whereas they are only rarely part of feminisation fantasies among heterosexual men. Other synonyms are effeminisation or demale.

Sometimes the submissive part even desires further, sometimes violent, training for the desired female role. In some circles and internet forums, fantasies of deportation abroad and a medical sex change are even described. Castration fantasies also appear in erotic BDSM literature in this context.
