Un travesti es tanto un hombre que viste ropa de mujer como una mujer que viste ropa de hombre.

La motivación es la misma: llevan la ropa del sexo opuesto para expresar su verdadero sexo interior.

Por lo tanto, los travestis se sienten prisioneros del sexo opuesto en su propio cuerpo. El travestismo se da tanto en homosexuales como en heterosexuales y, por tanto, es independiente de la orientación sexual.

El término travesti o travestismo se remonta a Mangnus Hirschfeld, que lo acuñó en 1910. Definió a todas las personas como travestis a las que les gusta llevar la ropa del sexo opuesto por el deseo de imitar al sexo opuesto lo más fielmente posible y de comportarse y sentir de la misma manera. Hoy en día, esta descripción se aplica sobre todo a las personas transexuales.
