Bastonade

Bastonade is originally a beating in which the bare soles of the feet are struck with percussion instruments. Bastonade or falaka is the term used to describe the beating of the soles of the bare feet. Depending on the purpose of the beating, the bastinado was used for torture or chastisement and was carried out with appropriate severity. The term bastinado comes from the Romance languages and means a caning or beating. The term falaka describes the same practice, but originates from Arabic. In more recent times, the terms bastonade, punch, foot whip or ankle cuff are also used.

Bastonade refers to a severe punishment, usually with a cane. The cane is used to strike the soles of the feet of the person to be punished, whereby at least the feet are fixed and bound to prevent evasion.

Canes, canes, whips or straps are used as instruments of punishment.

Blows to the soles of the feet are extremely painful and last for a long time. When used severely, the punished person can often only walk with restrictions for a long time. Caning on the bare soles of the feet is still used today in some countries around the world as a form of punishment for criminals and sinners.
