Infertility
Infertility describes the inability of a man to father a child or the inability of a woman to become pregnant.
In biology, the term infertility refers to the inability to conceive. In technical terms, this is referred to as sterility (in men) or infertility (in women). In human medicine, a couple is considered infertile if they have not conceived after at least one year of regular sexual intercourse without contraceptive measures.
Sterility in human medicine
Sterility is not uncommon. In Central Europe today, around one in six couples have difficulties fulfilling their desire to have children. 10% of couples need more than two years to have a child, 3-4% of couples remain permanently childless.
Around a third of involuntary childlessness is due to causes that lie with the woman, a third to causes that lie with the man and a third to combined or no causes. The fertility rate falls with increasing age.
Primary infertility is the failure to become pregnant after one year of regular sexual intercourse without contraception in a woman who has never conceived a child. Secondary infertility is the absence of pregnancy after one year of regular sexual intercourse without contraception in a woman who has already been pregnant at least once.
