Tawse

The tawse is an old Scottish instrument of chastisement. In the past, it was mainly used in schools.

The Scots also wanted to distinguish themselves from the English, who favoured the cane. It was used to administer blows to the hands, sometimes also to the buttocks for more severe punishments.

Until 1948, Scottish courts could impose up to 36 strokes on the buttocks as a punishment for juveniles. Today, the tawse is used almost exclusively in BDSM.
