Shibari

Shibari is an erotic bondage art that developed in Japan from the military bondage practice Hojōjutsu. Shibari comes from the Japanese and means to bind or tie.

This is why it is often referred to as Japanese bondage. However, shibari is more about the art of binding itself than the exercise of power and dominance. It is a further development of the military bondage technique Hojojutsu. While pure BDSM bondage is about making it clear who is on top and who is on the bottom, shibari is about the art of bondage itself.

For the restrainer, the satisfaction usually lies in seeing the bound person lying in front of them, artfully and unable to move. More rarely, bondage serves as preparation for further sadomasochistic practices. The terms for the person tying up (rigger) and the mostly female person tied up (bunny) come from the English language and date back to the time when Shibari was gaining a foothold in the BDSM scene.
