Partner swapping
Partner swapping refers to a sexual practice in which two couples whose partners are in a committed relationship swap sex partners. If there are more than four people or if no partners are involved, it is referred to as group sex. If there are fewer than two couples, i.e. three people, it is colloquially referred to as a threesome.
Partner swapping is often practised in an organised form and the participants are referred to as swingers. In addition to commercial swingers' clubs, there are also private swingers' parties or swingers' meetings. It is difficult to distinguish swingers parties from orgies and group sex.
Swapping partners can have different motives. For many couples, it is simply a mutual admission that they want to have sex with someone else. Although most people imagine something like this in their thoughts or dreams, only a few dare to talk about it with their partner.
According to those in favour of partner swapping, it can bring new momentum and new ideas into a relationship. However, partner swapping can also destroy a relationship if feelings such as jealousy are not overcome. Furthermore, even if it is consensual, partner swapping is interpreted by critics as tending to devalue the first partner. This partner is seen as at least partially uninteresting or inadequate. Finally - according to critics such as the Catholic Church - partner swapping degrades all those involved, as they perceive each other primarily as objects of mutual sexual gratification and not as people who long for love and fidelity.
