The connection between leather and BDSM originated in the post-war period, characterised by homosexual motorbike clubs. Over time, their emphatically masculine protective clothing became a well-known fetish. One small contribution to this was made by a world-famous "boy band" with their hit YMCA. One of its members belonged to one of the aforementioned homosexual motorbike clubs. Due to its popularity, this type of clothing became socially acceptable and is still increasingly popular today.
