Sexual intercourse
Sexual intercourse (also sexual act (from the Latin actus drive - movement), coitus (from the Latin coitus union - mating), copulation (from the Latin copulatio union - union), cohabitation (from the Latin cohabitatio cohabitation) or coitus) is traditionally understood to mean the heterosexual union of two sexual partners, in which the man inserts his erect penis into the woman's vagina - vaginal intercourse.
With the increasing social acceptance of other sexual practices, the term sexual intercourse or coitus has been given a broader meaning and is also used for other penetrative sexual practices such as anal intercourse in homosexual and heterosexual couples. Depending on the definition used, other forms of intense stimulation that do not involve the primary sexual organs of both partners, e.g. oral sex or masturbation, are increasingly regarded as a form or part of sexual intercourse.
