Story of the O

The Story of O is a sadomasochistic novel by Pauline Réage from 1954, in which female subjugation is depicted in detail.

The successful Parisian fashion photographer O is abducted to a remote castle by her lover René. There he teaches her sadomasochistic practices. She becomes an obedient slave and learns to submit to him completely, but nothing happens against her will. When René asks her to submit to the wishes of his friend Sir Stephen, O agrees as a token of love and burns Sir Stephen's mark into her skin.
